The communications industry went through revolutionary changes in the past few years. In 1974 AT&T was the largest corporation in the world, with nearly 1 million employees. AT&T controlled the whole industry from local and long distance phone service to the phone equipment manufacturing.

At the end of the 60's new companies appeared on the horizon: MCI, Sprint, ITT and Western Union. These companies offered direct services for large companies with offices in other states and cities at discount rates. The "war" started, when MCI demanded access to telephone customers, so they can terminate calls to any customer, who wishes to use MCI's services. AT&T refused the demand. MCI took AT&T on court. After seven years of court procedures, the court ordered the break up of AT&T's monopoly.

The long distance portion of the business was assigned to AT&T, while the local telephone service was given to seven "mini Bell" companies. The court has ordered the Bell companies to give access to any long distance telephone company. The actual separation happened in 1984.

As soon as the new market condition allowed, entrepreneurs saw the opportunity to get into the telecommunication business. Small companies started purchase service from larger companies at wholesale rates and offered lower prices to the end user. The new technologies allowed the resellers to purchase their own switching equipment and route calls trough the most competitive carrier.
